Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before heading up the mountain — from getting here to going off-grid.

Getting Here

Yes — the access road is steep and well-maintained, but it's too much for a standard 2-wheel drive vehicle. You will need 4-wheel drive or all-wheel drive (like a Subaru) to get to the cabins.

No worries — you can park at the bottom of the road and hike up. For all venues at Raven Rock Mountain, we offer safe private parking (look for the 2-Wheel Drive Parking signs). Access to the mountain venues includes a steep half-mile hike uphill.

Please be prepared to pack all luggage and gear in backpacks or easy-to-carry bags for the hike. Reach out before your stay and we can help coordinate logistics.

Yes, free parking is available on the property for guests who drive up. There's also a parking area at the bottom of the road for guests arriving in 2WD vehicles.

The Off-Grid Experience

All of our properties run on solar power rather than the electric grid. Each stay includes a 500-watt solar generator — enough to charge cell phones and simple electronics. Air conditioning is not available, but our mountain elevation keeps things naturally cool.

Cell service is surprisingly solid — 5G works well for texting and checking messages. There is no WiFi, but you're welcome to use your own personal hotspot. This is part of the off-grid experience, and honestly, most guests love the excuse to unplug.

No AC — but at this elevation, the mountain air stays comfortable even in summer. Portable fans are provided in each property. In cooler months, heating is handled by a wood-burning stove.

Bedding & Linens

Yes — guests are asked to bring their own queen-size sheets and blankets for all properties. Pillows are provided, along with a light comforter.

Treehaven guests: the bunk beds take twin sheets, so be sure to bring those in addition to queen bedding for the main bed.

Water, Bathrooms & Showers

Yes — each property is stocked with a 5-gallon spring water dispenser for drinking and cooking.

It varies by property:

  • Cliffside Cabin — A clean, well-maintained porta-potty and a cold spring water shower, both about 50 feet from the cabin. Part of the rustic off-grid experience.
  • Skyline Lodge — A full indoor hot shower, toilet, and vanity inside the cottage.
  • Skyscraper Treehouse — A clean, well-maintained porta-potty and a cold spring water shower, both about 50 feet from the cabin. Part of the rustic off-grid experience.
  • Treehaven Treehouse — A bathhouse with a hot shower and large utility sink, plus a clean, well-maintained porta-potty.

Check each listing page for full details.

It depends on the property. The Cliffside Cabin and Skyscraper Treehouse each have cold spring water outdoor showers. The Skyline Lodge and Treehaven Treehouse have hot water showers. Check the listing page for your specific stay for full bathroom details.

Kitchen & Amenities

All properties include a 2-burner gas cooktop, outdoor dining, and basic cooking accessories: salt and pepper, mugs, plates, a cast iron skillet, a pot, a tea kettle, and a coffee press.

Property-specific extras:

  • Skyline Lodge — built-in charcoal grill, mini fridge/freezer
  • Treehaven Treehouse — built-in charcoal grill, mini fridge/freezer
  • Skyscraper Treehouse — built-in charcoal grill

Check each listing page for full details.

Yes — a coffee press is provided. Bring your own beans. A hot water kettle is also available at all properties.

Yes — all properties except the Cliffside Cabin have a built-in charcoal grill. The Cliffside Cabin has a 2-burner gas cooktop instead. Please provide your own charcoal.

Firewood is provided for heating inside the properties, but not for the outdoor fire pits. We recommend picking some up at the grocery store on your way up the mountain.

Sauna and cold plunge experiences at Raven Rock Mountain are reserved for private retreats, wellness events, and small weddings. These amenities are not included with standard Airbnb stays. Please inquire if you're interested in a private booking.

Pets & Policies

Yes, we are pet-friendly. There is a $35 pet fee to cover additional cleaning and maintenance. Please keep in mind that bears and other wildlife are active on the mountain — store all food securely and keep an eye on your furry companion.

No smoking inside any of the properties. If you smoke outside, please dispose of cigarette butts carefully and use extra caution — we're surrounded by a mountain forest that we want to protect.

Parties and events are not permitted during personal stays. However, we do offer our property as a wedding, ceremony, and retreat venue — visit our Weddings & Ceremonies page to learn more and inquire.

Wildlife & Exploring the Area

Quite a bit. Bears are present on the mountain — they're shy but food-motivated, so please store all food securely. Early risers who move quietly might also spot bobcats, foxes, deer, wild turkeys, hawks, falcons, owls, grouse, and ravens. The ravens are a given.

You're perfectly positioned for some of the best hiking in Western North Carolina. The closest trail is Bear Wallow Mountain — just 15 minutes away with spectacular views. Wild Cat Rock is another great nearby option, about 25 minutes out.

For bigger destinations, the Blue Ridge Parkway is a 20-minute drive, Pisgah National Forest is 30 minutes, and DuPont State Forest is 40 minutes away. Visit our Local Favorites page for curated recommendations.

About 15 minutes away. We'd recommend stocking up before you head up the mountain — especially for multi-night stays. Hendersonville (15 minutes) and Asheville (30 minutes) both have great options.

Booking & Check-In

Check-in is between 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM, and check-out is by 10:00 AM. Check-in is self-service via keypad — no need to coordinate a meet-up. Later arrivals are possible, but we strongly encourage arriving before dark. The mountain road is much easier to navigate in daylight.
